Ablative lasers (such as CO2 and erbium:YAG) vaporize the outer skin layers, while non-ablative and fractional lasers heat underlying tissue without fully removing the surface. Both approaches aim to stimulate collagen production and cell turnover, reducing the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, and pigmentation. The right type depends on your skin, concerns, and how much recovery time you can accommodate.

What to expect

A typical appointment lasts 30 minutes to two hours, often with topical or local anesthetic. Ablative treatments require significant downtime—skin may be raw, red, and oozing for one to two weeks, with pinkness lasting months. Non-ablative and fractional lasers involve milder redness and swelling lasting days. You may need several sessions for lighter treatments. Collagen remodeling continues for months, so final results emerge gradually over three to six months. Diligent sun protection and gentle skincare during healing are essential.

Multiple randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and comparative clinical studies support laser resurfacing for photoaging, acne scarring, and rhytids. Fractional CO2 and erbium lasers show consistent improvement in wrinkles and scar depth in controlled trials, though effect sizes vary and studies often use small samples with short follow-up. Non-ablative fractional lasers show more modest results but with less downtime. Evidence quality is moderate overall; head-to-head comparisons and long-term durability data remain limited, and outcomes depend heavily on device settings and operator skill.

Risks include redness, swelling, prolonged healing, infection, scarring, and pigment changes—especially hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation in darker skin tones. People with active infections, certain skin conditions, isotretinoin use, keloid tendency, or darker complexions should be cautious and consult an experienced provider. Sun exposure after treatment raises complication risk.

Is laser resurfacing painful?
